The Town of Pelham Recreation Department offers extensive recreation programs for all ages that includes everything from piano and chess lessons to soccer, karate and adult rowing.
The Town of Pelham maintains the Richard Daronco Townhouse as a community center with meeting spaces, Town Recreation & Senior Advocate Offices and the Pelham Childrens’ Center, a daycare facility operated by a Pelham not-for-profit organization. Located on Fifth Avenue in Pelham’s downtown, the Townhouse (previously Redeemer Episcopal Church) was donated to the Town and named after the late Honorable Richard Daronco.
In addition to recreation programs run by the Town of Pelham, there are several community-based sports programs established and operated by volunteer boards, including:
Pelham Hockey Association, offering a hockey program for all ages; most children in the program learn to skate at an early age, begin the hockey clinic program by age 5, and join the “Pelham Mites” at age 6. The program is operated out of the “Ice Hutch” on the Pelham border in Mount Vernon.
Pelham Recrational Soccer is a volunteer organization that offers a supportive, fun environment to develop children’s interest in the sport. There is also a travel soccer program for more competitive players.
Mixed Masters Quad Racing in “Head of the Fish”
Pelham Community Rowing Association, with a full-time executive director and several coaches, this organization offers all levels of sculling and sweep rowing from learn to row up to competitive racing.
Other organizations include: Pelham Children’s Theater (a community theater group for children in grades 4-6), Pelham Little League, Cub & Boy Scouts, Daisy Girls, Brownies & Girl Scouts.
Parks
Glover Field is the primary recreational space in Pelham. Located just south of Colonial Avenue, the facility includes a new synthetic turf football field (funded by Friends of Pelham Sports), baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts and a state-of-the art track. A new field house has just been completed.
Sixth Street Playground
The Sixth Street Playground & Tennis Courts are located between Third and Fourth Avenues. The facility includes a toddler and children’s playground that was rebuilt in 1999 by volunteers through a fundraising effort by the Junior League of Pelham. The Junior League more recently raised funds for a complete restoration of Weihman Park at the corner of the Esplanade and Boston Post Road. The park, which is conveniently located next to Huguenot Church and Nursery School, has a new perimeter fence, beautiful landscaping, classic iron benches and restored pillars and lighting.
Weihman Park
Weihman Park is located at the corner of the Esplanade and Boston Post Road. It was recently recreated by the Junior League of Pelham in cooperation with the Village of Pelham Manor to install new paths, benches, landscaping and fencing. It is a popular place for children and parents after pick-up from Huguenot Nursery School. Shore Park, is a Village of Pelham Manor Park that fronts on the Long Island Sound. It includes playing fields and a running track.
Gazebo Park
Gazebo Park located on Fifth Avenue near the Pelham Train Station. Built with private funds raised by the Pelham Rotary Club, this facility is used for the Pelham summer concert series featuring big-band and other family music and entertainment on Monday evenings. The park also includes a recently-renovated playground for children (open to the public on weekends and used by the Pelham Children’s Center during the week).
Fireman’s Park
Other fields used for Pelham Recreation programs: Prospect Field (located at Prospect Hill School), Ingalls Field (located at the Pelham Memorial High School, Franklin Field (located across from the Pelham Middle School, Tressle Field (located on Pelhamdale Avenue at Manor Circle), and Spring Street Field (located on Spring Street just south of the Boston Post Road).
Pelham is also blessed to have along its entire southern border, 2700 acres of parkland in the City of New York’s “Pelham Bay Park.” As the largest park in the City, Pelham Bay includes a bicycle path that runs from Pelham Manor south to Pelham Parkway. The park also includes hiking trails, riding trails, a stable that provides horses for trail rides, Split Rock and Pelham Bay golf courses and “Orchard Beach.”
